I hope someone here can help me out. I recently adopted an adorable little kitten from a rescue, and I'm trying to figure out exactly how old she is. The rescue didn't give me a precise age, just an estimate, and I'm a bit torn on whether she's closer to 2 or 3 months old. She's starting to become quite the playful ball of fur, and she has these tiny yet sharp teeth and is still getting used to her surroundings. She’s eating solid food really well, but sometimes she still seems a bit uncoordinated when she plays. She's a pro at using the litter box though, which I'm super thankful for! I've tried looking up signs to figure out her age, like the size of her eyes and the length of her fur, but I'm getting mixed signals. I just want to make sure I’m doing everything right for her stage of development, so any insights or advice you could share would be amazing! Thanks so much in advance!
Hi there! Determining your kitten's age can be a bit tricky, but there are a few indicators that can help you estimate whether they're closer to 2 or 3 months old.
At around 2 months (8 weeks), kittens typically weigh about 2 pounds and are quite active, though they may still be honing their coordination skills. They will have all their baby teeth, which appear small and a bit translucent.
By 3 months (12 weeks), your kitten will likely weigh 3 pounds and be more agile, energetic, and independent. Their baby teeth will look more developed and their adult teeth might just be starting to erupt.
Pay attention to their behavior and size, too. A 3-month-old is often more adventurous and social than a 2-month-old.
For now, make sure your kitten has access to plenty of food and water and a safe environment to play and explore. Watch for signs of discomfort like persistent sneezing, coughing, or lethargy, as these could indicate a health issue. If your kitten isn't eating or seems overly tired, it's best to consult a vet.
If you're still unsure about your kitten’s age, I’d recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. We’d be happy to assess any specific details you're noticing and give you more tailored advice.
