Abnormal lab results for cat

I’m really worried and could use some advice. I just got back the lab results for my cat, Luna, and they’re not looking normal. I’m not sure what to make of them, and my anxiety is through the roof. The vet mentioned something about her liver enzymes being elevated, which sounds scary. Has anyone dealt with anything similar or can shed some light on what this might mean? Luna's been acting a bit lethargic the past few days, and now I’m wondering if it’s connected. She’s my little companion, and I’m freaking out about what the next steps might be. Any insights or similar experiences would be so appreciated.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern about your cat's abnormal lab results. I know it can be worrying to see those numbers come back different from the norm. Let's try to make sense of it together.

Lab results can be off for a number of reasons. Common culprits might include issues with the kidneys, liver, or thyroid, as well as infections or dietary imbalances. For instance, if kidney values are high, it might indicate chronic kidney disease, which is fairly common in cats. Abnormal liver enzymes could point to liver disease or inflammation.

To help at home, ensure your cat’s diet is balanced and that they have plenty of fresh water, as hydration can support both the kidneys and liver. If their appetite or drinking habits suddenly change, that could be a clue to what's going on.

Keep an eye out for signs like vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, lethargy, or changes in urination or drinking, as these can indicate the issue needs urgent attention.

It’s important to follow up on these lab results with a vet to understand the bigger picture and decide on the next steps. Consider booking a video consult with a vet on Dial A Vet, where we can discuss your cat's health in more detail and make a plan tailored for them.
