Thanks for reaching out with your concern! It sounds like you've spotted something unusual on your pet's skin, and I completely understand why you're worried.
What you're seeing could be a few different things. If it's a tick, it will typically have eight legs and might be engorged with your pet’s blood. Ticks can transmit diseases, so it's important to safely remove them and keep a close eye on your pet for any changes in behavior or appetite. A blood blister, on the other hand, will look like a raised, fluid-filled bump and is typically red or purplish. These can form from minor trauma or irritation.
To care for a potential blood blister at home, keep the area clean and watch for any increase in size, redness, or pain, which could suggest infection. Avoid popping it, as this can lead to complications.
Keep an eye out for other symptoms like swelling, heat, or pus, as they can indicate an infection or another more serious problem. If it's a tick, monitor for weakness, fever, or limping, as these can be signs of tick-borne illnesses.
I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. They can help you determine exactly what you're dealing with and guide you on the best course of action to keep your furry friend healthy and happy.
A tick? A blood blister? WTH is this?
I’m kind of freaking out right now and could really use some advice. So, I was giving my dog Max his usual belly rubs this morning, and I noticed this weird dark bump near his shoulder. At first, I thought it was just some dirt or something, but it’s more like a tiny, raised spot. It's the size of a pencil eraser, sort of reddish-black, and it feels weirdly firm to the touch. I can't tell if it’s a tick or some kind of blood blister. Max doesn’t seem to be in pain when I touch it, but he’s been scratching at it a little. He’s mostly acting normal, just chasing his squirrel toys and napping like usual, but I’m worried. Should I try to remove it myself, or is this a vet situation? What do you guys think? Any help would be amazing!
