A dog tried to attack me and my service dog protected me, the dog was vaccinated and up to date on shots. What could this be?

I don’t know what’s going on, but I need some advice. Earlier today, as I was on my usual morning walk with Charlie, my service dog, this strange situation happened. Out of nowhere, a neighbor's dog, who I thought was generally friendly, charged at me aggressively. It felt so surreal. Charlie, bless his heart, immediately leapt in front of me to protect me, barking and standing his ground until the dog backed off. I know this other dog is vaccinated and up to date on all its shots, but now I’m left feeling rattled and unsure about what it all means. Why would another dog randomly act out like that? And what should I do to make sure both Charlie and I handle any future walks better? I appreciate any suggestions because I’m feeling a bit out of sorts right now.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out. It's definitely unsettling to have experienced such a situation. A dog's aggressive behavior can stem from various causes, even when it's vaccinated and up to date on its shots. Sometimes, it could be due to territorial instincts, fear, or a past negative experience with another dog. In some cases, medical issues such as pain or neurological problems can also lead to aggression.

For immediate at-home care, make sure both you and your service dog are safe and uninjured. Check your service dog for any signs of bites or injuries, even if they aren't immediately visible. Clean any wounds with mild soap and water and apply a clean bandage if needed. Monitor for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, or discharge.

Look out for any behavioral changes in your service dog, such as increased anxiety or aggression, as these could indicate trauma from the incident. If your dog shows signs of distress or if any injuries worsen, it’s important to seek veterinary attention.

Since this involves aggressive behavior, having a video consult with one of our vets can provide further insights into both addressing your service dog’s well-being and understanding aggressive behaviors you might encounter.
