Question:

8yo F Rescue Catahoula Mix with periodic chronic limp

I'm really hoping someone here can offer some advice. I have an 8-year-old female rescue Catahoula mix named Luna, and I'm starting to get pretty worried about her. Every few months or so, she develops this limp in her back leg that just doesn't seem to go away. I noticed her limping again yesterday after our usual walk in the park. There's no obvious injury or swelling, and she still tries to be playful, but I can tell it’s bothering her. I've taken her to the vet before, but they just suggest rest and pain meds, which don’t seem like a long-term solution. Has anyone else experienced something similar with their dog? I’m desperate to help Luna feel better. Any advice or insights would be seriously appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Hello there! I'm sorry your pup is experiencing this issue. Let's explore what might be causing that limp. In older dogs, arthritis is a common culprit, especially in active breeds like Catahoulas. Past injuries or wear and tear can exacerbate joint discomfort. Other possibilities include a soft tissue injury, like a strain or sprain, or even a minor cut or paw pad issue that might not be immediately obvious.

At home, try to limit her activity for a few days to rest the limb. Applying a warm compress for 10-15 minutes at a time can offer relief if it’s a joint issue. Ensure her bed is soft and comfortable to support her rest. Also, gently check her paw and toes for any signs of cuts, swelling, or foreign bodies like thorns.

Watch for signs that things might be more severe, such as the limp worsening, a noticeable decrease in energy or appetite, or signs of pain like whining or yelping. If her condition doesn't improve with rest or she shows any concerning signs, it would be wise to seek a more thorough examination.

I'd recommend booking a video consult with a vet through Dial A Vet so we can discuss her situation in more detail and decide on the best course of action. Hope she feels better soon!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
