8yo F cat, shaved spot after blood draw?

I don’t know what’s going on, but I just noticed something weird with my cat, Luna. She’s eight and I had to take her to the vet yesterday morning for some routine blood work. Everything seemed fine until today when I was petting her this afternoon and felt a small shaved patch on her front leg where they drew the blood. Is this normal, or should I be worried? She doesn’t seem to be bothered by it, but I can’t help freaking out a little because it looks so odd, and I’ve never seen this happen before. Did the vet make a mistake, or is this just part of the process? Please let me know if this is something I should be concerned about!

Answer

Appreciate the question — let's unpack this. It's quite common for cats to have a small patch of fur shaved when they undergo a blood draw. This is to give the vet a clean area for the procedure and to see the vein more clearly. The shaved area might feel a bit peculiar to your cat, but it usually grows back without any issues.

Potential causes for any post-procedure concerns could include mild skin irritation or itchiness where the fur was shaved. A little redness or slight swelling can occur, but this generally resolves quickly on its own. Keeping the area clean and ensuring your cat doesn’t lick or scratch it excessively is a good first step.

In terms of at-home care, you can gently keep an eye on the area. If it appears a little dry, you can use a damp, soft cloth to wipe it gently. Make sure to check that your cat seems comfortable and isn't spending too much time fussing over it.

Watch out for signs of infection, like increased redness, swelling, warmth, discharge, or if your cat seems unusually bothered by the area. If you notice any of these symptoms or if the spot doesn't appear to be healing, it would be a good idea to chat with a vet.
