8 wk male foster kittens w/ diarrhea

I really need some advice and I'm quite stressed out over this. I’m currently fostering two adorable 8-week-old male kittens, and they’ve both had diarrhea for the past couple of days. I’ve been feeding them a diet of high-quality kitten food, and they seem to be eating and drinking normally, but the diarrhea just won't go away. They’re both playful and don’t seem lethargic, which is good, but cleaning up after them every few hours is becoming overwhelming. I’ve tried mixing in a little pumpkin to help firm things up, but nothing seems to change. I'm concerned there might be something more serious going on. Has anyone else ever dealt with something similar? Any tips would be greatly appreciated, as I just want to make sure these little guys are healthy and comfortable. Thanks!

Answer

Hi there! It’s great that you’re fostering kittens; they can be such a joy, even if they’re feeling a bit under the weather right now. Diarrhea in kittens, especially at around 8 weeks old, is not uncommon, but it's something to address promptly.

There are a few potential causes for your foster kittens' diarrhea. It might be due to dietary changes, stress from a new environment, parasites like worms or protozoa, or even a viral or bacterial infection. In young kittens, their digestive systems are still developing, making them more sensitive.

Here’s what you can do at home: Make sure they stay hydrated, as diarrhea can lead to dehydration. You might consider offering them some plain, boiled chicken or rice mixed with water to see if this helps firm up their stools. Ensure they have a consistent diet; sudden changes can upset their tummies.

Watch for signs that could indicate a more serious issue, such as lethargy, vomiting, lack of appetite, blood in the stool, or if the diarrhea persists for more than a couple of days.

Since they’re so young and more vulnerable to getting sick, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals. They can help you determine the cause and the best course of action to get your little ones back to feeling their best.
