7yo Male Cat w/ no appetite after enema/constipation experience

I'm really worried about my 7-year-old male cat, Max. Last week, he had a really rough time with constipation, and we ended up having to take him to the vet for an enema. It seemed to help a bit at the time, but now he's barely touching his food. He's always been such a hearty eater, so seeing him like this is breaking my heart. He's still drinking water and using the litter box, but he seems lethargic and isn't interested in playtime or his usual treats. I’m not sure if this is just a temporary thing from the enema or if something else might be going on. Has anyone else experienced something like this with their cat? What should I do to help him get his appetite back? Any advice or similar stories would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Answer

Hello and thanks for reaching out. It sounds like your feline friend has had a tough time recently with constipation! It’s not uncommon for a cat to feel a little off after a procedure like an enema. The lack of appetite could be due to various things, such as residual discomfort, stress from the vet visit, or mild dehydration.

First, ensure your cat has access to plenty of fresh water. Moisture-rich foods can also help, so consider offering canned cat food if he's not eating his usual kibble. A little bit of warm water added to his food can make it more enticing and easier for him to eat.

Keep an eye on your cat for any signs of ongoing discomfort or distress, such as vomiting, lethargy, or continued lack of appetite beyond 24-48 hours. These symptoms may suggest something more serious, like an intestinal blockage or another underlying health issue that needs prompt attention.

If your cat doesn’t bounce back quickly or if you notice any worrying signs, it would be best to have a video consultation with a vet. They can provide tailored advice and see if further investigation or treatment is necessary. Remember, you know your pet best, and getting a professional opinion can provide peace of mind.
