Question:

7m Old Male Cat with Chronic Wheezing

I’m feeling pretty worried about my little guy and could really use some advice. My seven-month-old male cat has been having these chronic wheezing episodes for a while now, and I’m at my wit's end trying to figure out what’s going on. It sounds almost like he's trying to cough something up, but nothing ever comes out. I've taken him to the vet a couple of times, and they ruled out any immediate infections and did an X-ray that showed nothing significant. The vet mentioned allergies or asthma might be the cause, but they didn't seem too certain, and treatments haven’t really helped so far. He’s otherwise a happy and playful kitty, with a good appetite and energy levels, which makes this even more confusing and worrisome. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Any advice or insights would be incredibly appreciated because I just want him to be comfortable and healthy. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Hello there! I'm glad you reached out because it's important to address any chronic wheezing in your cat. Wheezing can occur for a variety of reasons, and understanding them is the first step to ensuring your kitty stays healthy.

One possible cause could be asthma, which is quite common in cats and can cause wheezing sounds due to the narrowing of the airways. Allergies or irritants like smoke, dust, or certain household cleaners can also trigger these symptoms. Another potential reason might be a respiratory infection, which can cause inflammation and mucus build-up, making it harder for your kitty to breathe comfortably.

For at-home care, try reducing potential allergens by keeping your home well-ventilated and using cat-safe cleaning products. Keep an eye on your little guy's breathing patterns, and if he seems more comfortable resting at an elevated angle, let him snooze on a slightly raised pillow.

Be watchful for signs indicating a serious issue, such as sudden difficulty breathing, blue-tinged gums, lethargy, or a marked decrease in appetite. These signs could necessitate immediate veterinary attention.

It would be a good idea to book a video consult with Dial A Vet. We can better assess what's going on and guide you to ensure your furry friend gets the care he needs. Take care!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
