Question:

70# dog + 3 cups of bread dough

I'm a bit frazzled right now and could really use some advice. So, my big ol’ 70-pound pupper, Max, just did something unbelievably silly. While I was busy prepping dinner, he somehow managed to sneak into the kitchen and gobble down about 3 cups of bread dough that I had left rising on the counter. I’m worried because I’ve heard that dough can expand in their stomachs and potentially be dangerous. Max seems fine at the moment—just a bit bloated and incredibly pleased with himself—but I’m freaking out because I don’t want him to get sick. Has anyone else had their dog eat something crazy like this before? Should I rush him to the vet, or is there anything I can do to help him at home first? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:

Hi there! It sounds like your dog has gotten into something they shouldn't have—dogs do have a knack for finding those tasty, off-limits snacks!

When a dog eats bread dough, there's a key concern: as the dough sits in their warm stomach, it can continue to rise and expand, potentially causing a bloated tummy or even twisting of the stomach, known as gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV)—a serious condition. Another issue is the dough producing alcohol as it ferments, which can lead to alcohol toxicosis.

At home, keep an eye out for signs like a distended belly, repeated attempts to vomit, weakness, disorientation, or exaggerated efforts to get comfortable. These could indicate a serious problem.

For now, make sure your pup doesn't have access to any more dough and encourage them to rest. It's best not to try inducing vomiting at home unless advised by a vet, as it can sometimes cause more harm than good.

Since this situation can turn serious quickly, I highly recommend booking a video consult with a vet on Dial A Vet to discuss your dog's specific symptoms and determine if an emergency visit is necessary. We're here to help you and your furry friend!

  Book A Vet Consultation
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
