6 week old kittens not eating

Help, I’m really worried about my six-week-old kittens not eating! I’m new to fostering and need some advice. These tiny furballs were doing okay with mom, but she got sick and the vet had to keep her overnight. Now they're refusing to eat anything I give them. I’ve tried wet kitten food and even some kitten formula in a bottle, but they just sniff and turn away. I've also tried warming the food slightly and offering it with my finger or a spoon, but no luck. They seem a bit lethargic and I'm terrified something’s wrong. Is it normal for kittens this age to be so finicky, or should I be rushing them to the vet immediately? Could it be stress from missing their mom? Any tips on how I can encourage them to eat would be greatly appreciated!

Answer

Thanks for reaching out about your kittens; it's natural to feel concerned. At six weeks old, kittens are just beginning to transition from nursing to more solid foods. If they're not eating, it might be due to various reasons. One common cause is the stress of a new environment if you've recently adopted them. They might also be struggling with the change from milk to solid food, or they could be experiencing a mild illness like an upset stomach.

To help encourage eating at home, try offering a small amount of kitten-friendly wet food, which is often easier to digest and more appealing than dry kibble. You can warm it slightly to enhance its aroma. Make sure their eating area is quiet and stress-free. Also, ensure they stay hydrated by offering fresh water, as dehydration can quickly become serious in kittens.

However, if they continue not to eat, or if you notice symptoms like lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing, it’s important to seek veterinary attention as these could indicate something more serious.
