5 year old dog - diagnosed with IMHA - not responding well to treatment

I'm really at a loss and could use some advice or even just some comforting words right now. My sweet five-year-old pup, Max, was recently diagnosed with Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA), and despite our best efforts, things aren’t going too well. The vet prescribed a combination of medications, including prednisone, but it's been almost two weeks, and he's not showing much improvement. He's incredibly lethargic, has lost his interest in food, and his gums are still pale. We're doing everything we can, multiple vet visits and constant care, but watching him struggle like this is breaking my heart. Has anyone else been through something similar with their dog? I’m desperately looking for reassurance or maybe some suggestions on what else we could try. Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer

Hello there, I'm so sorry to hear that your dog is struggling with IMHA, which I know can be really troubling. IMHA, or Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, is a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's red blood cells, leading to anemia. Sometimes, there is an underlying cause like an infection or a trigger that leads to this, but it can also occur without a known reason.

Since your dog isn't responding well to treatment, it might mean that we need to look at alternative medications or evaluate concurrent issues that might be hindering progress. It's crucial to monitor your dog for any increase in lethargy, labored breathing, pale gums, or changes in appetite, as these could indicate a worsening condition or secondary complications.

At home, ensure your dog gets plenty of rest and has easy access to their favorite resting spots to minimize exertion. Keep stress levels low and provide a calm, nurturing environment. Hydration is also key, so make sure fresh water is always available.

Given the complexity of IMHA, it would be beneficial to book a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals. They can offer tailored advice and might suggest adjustments to your current treatment plan to better support your furry friend.
