I completely understand why you're worried. When a pet experiences both vomiting and diarrhea for over 24 hours, it can be quite concerning. There are several potential causes, such as dietary indiscretion (eating something they shouldn’t have), infections, parasites, or even stress. In more serious cases, it could be signs of an underlying health issue or obstruction.
The first step at home is to ensure your pet stays hydrated, as they might be losing a lot of fluids. You can offer small amounts of water frequently. Electrolyte solutions designed for pets can also help, but avoid anything with artificial sweeteners. Withhold solid food for 12-24 hours, then introduce a bland diet, like boiled chicken and rice, in small portions.
Keep an eye on any additional symptoms such as lethargy, blood in vomit or stool, or a fever, as these could indicate a more serious condition. If your pet is a puppy, geriatric, or has pre-existing health conditions, they might be more vulnerable and should be seen sooner.
It’s a good idea to book a video consult with Dial A Vet to discuss your pet's specific symptoms and needs. This way, we can provide more tailored advice and determine if an in-person visit is necessary.
24h vomiting + diarrhea. How should I proceed?
I don’t know what’s going on with Max lately, and I’m starting to get really worried. He’s been vomiting and having diarrhea since yesterday afternoon, and it hasn’t let up at all. He’s normally such a playful pup, but now he’s just lying around looking so sad and miserable. I tried giving him some boiled chicken and rice, like a friend suggested, but he’s not interested in eating anything. It’s been almost a full day now, and I’m not sure if this is something that’ll pass or if I should be making an emergency vet appointment. Has anyone else dealt with this before, and should I be freaking out as much as I am right now?
