20 yr cat eating very little, stopped being vocal, purrs w food

I’m really struggling right now and could use some advice. My cat, Whiskers, is 20 years old and has suddenly started eating very little. It’s such a drastic change because he used to be so vocal and tell me exactly when he wanted his food or treats. Now he’s gone totally silent, and I can’t even remember the last time I heard his little meow. The only time he seems content is when he's actually eating, at which point he starts to purr. I’m worried because it seems like something is wrong, but I can't put my finger on it. He doesn’t seem to be in pain, but the changes in his behavior are freaking me out. I’ve had him since he was a kitten, and I just want to make sure I’m doing everything I can for him. Has anyone experienced something similar with their senior cat? Any thoughts or advice would be so appreciated.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern. It sounds like your 20-year-old feline friend is going through some changes, and I'm here to help guide you.

It's not unusual for older cats to eat less due to age-related issues. Some possible causes could be dental problems, such as sore gums or teeth, which can make eating uncomfortable. Kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, or other chronic conditions common in senior cats can also affect appetite. Additionally, changes in behavior like being less vocal and only purring when offered food may indicate discomfort or pain.

At home, you could try warming her food slightly to enhance its aroma, making it more enticing. Offering her softer food, like a pâté or finely chopped canned food, can also be easier to eat if she's experiencing dental difficulties.

Watch for signs like significant weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, or changes in urination habits. These could indicate a more serious health issue needing prompt veterinary attention.

Given her advanced age and current symptoms, a thorough check-up with a veterinarian is essential. I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. They can provide further insights and suggest the best course of action to keep your beloved pet comfortable and healthy.
