Question:

2 year old cat with cryptococcosis is now blind due to detached retinas after 70 days of flunazcole treatment. Do I have any other options?

I’m feeling completely overwhelmed right now and could really use some advice. My sweet 2-year-old kitty was diagnosed with cryptococcosis a while back, and our vet started him on fluconazole. We’ve been doing everything we can, but after 70 days of treatment, his condition has taken a heartbreaking turn. His retinas have detached, and he’s now blind. I’m honestly crushed and worried sick about what to do next. Has anyone else gone through something similar with their cat? Are there any alternative treatments or options that might help him? I just want to give him the best possible chance, but I’m at a loss here. Any advice or experiences you could share would mean the world to me. Thank you so much in advance.

Answer:

Thanks for reaching out about your cat. I can only imagine how challenging this must be for both of you.

Cryptococcosis in cats can sometimes lead to complications like retinal detachment and blindness, particularly if the infection spreads to the central nervous system. While fluconazole is commonly used, not all cats respond the same way, and severe cases might need a more aggressive treatment plan.

First, consider a thorough reassessment by your vet or a veterinary ophthalmologist to confirm the current condition and explore any possible reversible causes of blindness. In some cases, other antifungal medications or combination therapy might be more effective. Additionally, supportive care that boosts your cat's immune system and overall health can be beneficial.

At home, ensure your cat's environment is safe and comfortable to navigate, which could include consistent furniture placement, using textures like rugs for guidance, and providing auditory cues for key locations like their bed or litter box.

Watch for signs such as behavior changes, excessive disorientation, or return of respiratory or neurological symptoms, as they could indicate a worsening condition.

Your next best step would be to book a video consult with a Dial A Vet specialist. They can tailor a treatment plan and support your kitty’s needs, keeping her quality of life in focus.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
