2 year cat losing muscle mass despite appetite

Something weird just happened, and I'm really worried about my cat. She's only 2 years old, but over the past month, I've noticed that she’s lost a lot of muscle, especially around her back legs and shoulders, even though she's still got a huge appetite. I feed her the same as I've always done, and she eats it all up, sometimes even begging for more. She's still playful and runs around, but something just seems off, you know? It's like she's getting thinner by the day, and I can even feel her bones now when I pet her. I’m totally at a loss here—has anyone else dealt with this before? Is it something serious? I’d really appreciate any advice!

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern about your cat. It sounds like you're noticing something quite unsettling, and I want to help you get to the bottom of it.

When a cat is losing muscle mass despite having a good appetite, there are a few possibilities to consider. One potential cause is hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland is overactive, speeding up metabolism and leading to muscle loss. Diabetes is another possibility, as it affects how your cat's body processes glucose and can cause weight and muscle loss if untreated. Parasites or certain gastrointestinal issues might also lead to inadequate nutrient absorption, despite a fine appetite.

At home, monitor your cat's behavior and energy levels closely. Ensure your cat is eating high-quality food. If you're noticing anything unusual like vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, increased urination, or changes in behavior, those are signs that warrant closer medical attention.

Given the symptoms you've described, it’s a good idea to schedule a video consult with Dial A Vet. A vet can further assess your cat's condition, and may suggest specific tests or treatments to address the underlying cause of the muscle loss.
