2 Week old chick with wiry neck, options for treatment?

Help, I'm at a loss and could really use some advice. I have a two-week-old chick that I recently hatched, and I've noticed something strange happening with its neck. It's sort of wobbly and wiry, causing the little one to struggle to keep its head up straight. It's really breaking my heart to see it stumble around, trying to find its footing. I've heard this might be something called "wry neck," but I have no clue how to treat it, or if that's even the right diagnosis. I want to do everything I can to help this tiny chick live a normal life. Has anyone else dealt with this before? Any suggestions on treatment options that have worked or advice on what I might be dealing with here? Thank you in advance!

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern about your young chick. A "wiry neck" in chicks might be a sign of a condition known as "wry neck" or torticollis. This can be caused by several things like nutritional deficiencies, head injuries, or even genetic issues. A common cause in chicks is a lack of Vitamin E or selenium in their diet.

At home, you can try gently supplementing its diet with Vitamin E. You can do this by incorporating foods rich in Vitamin E or using a liquid supplement designed for chickens, making sure to avoid excessive dosing. Including small amounts of selenium-rich foods can also be beneficial, but remember, balance is key.

Keep an eye on your chick for any worsening symptoms like an inability to stand, eat properly, or if it seems distressed or lethargic. These can be signs that the problem needs more serious intervention.

For a more tailored and safe plan, or if the symptoms persist or worsen, I suggest you book a video consult with one of our vets here at Dial A Vet. They can offer you specific advice and help ensure your chick gets the best care possible.
