Question:

15yo cat suddenly throwing up everyday with no change in his life

I'm really worried and could use some advice. My 15-year-old kitty, Whiskers, who has been the picture of health until now, has suddenly started throwing up every day this past week. It's breaking my heart to see him like this. Nothing has changed in his environment or diet—same food, same routines. I've tried adjusting feeding times, thinking maybe it was just a timing issue, but it hasn’t helped. He's my little buddy and means the world to me, and I’m really anxious because he's always been such a trooper. The vet can't see him until the end of the week, and I'm just struggling with the wait, not knowing what's going on. Has anyone experienced something similar with their senior cats? What can I do to ease his discomfort until we can get some answers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:

Hello there! I'm really sorry to hear that your senior cat is having such a tough time. At 15 years old, it's not uncommon for cats to start showing some health issues. The vomiting could be due to several reasons, especially if there hasn’t been any change in his day-to-day routine or diet.

One possibility is that he's experiencing gastrointestinal issues, which could range from mild inflammation to more serious conditions like kidney disease or hyperthyroidism. Another potential cause could be stress, which, even without a clear trigger, can sometimes affect older cats more significantly.

For at-home care, ensure he stays hydrated and consider offering smaller, more frequent meals, which can be easier on his stomach. Keeping an eye on him for any additional symptoms like diarrhea, lethargy, or weight loss is important. These could all indicate a more serious underlying issue that needs addressing.

If his vomiting persists for more than a couple of days, or if he seems in distress, it’s time to take action. I’d recommend booking a video consult with us at Dial A Vet so we can dive deeper into his symptoms and guide you with the appropriate next steps. We're here to help!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
