13 year old F cat dribbling urine now this..neg uti

Help, what do I do? My 13-year-old girl has started dribbling urine, and it's really freaking me out. We went to the vet, and they did a test, but it came back negative for a UTI. It's been a couple of days now, and she’s still leaking. I noticed it more when she’s laying down on her favorite chair, and it's making her seem uncomfortable. She seems a bit off; not her usual sassy self, just kind of tired and maybe a little embarrassed. Every time she stands up, I find these little wet spots, and I'm just not sure what's going on or what I should do next. Has anyone else experienced something like this with an older cat? I'm starting to worry it might be something more serious, and I could really use some advice.

Answer

Appreciate the question—let's unpack this. It can be concerning when your senior cat starts experiencing urinary issues like dribbling urine. Since the UTI has been ruled out, there are a few other possibilities to consider.

One common cause could be age-related weakening of the muscles that control urination, known as incontinence. Additionally, neurological issues can sometimes affect a cat's ability to control their bladder. Another possibility is that there might be a more complex underlying condition like kidney disease or bladder stones that hasn't been detected yet.

At home, you can help by keeping her litter box easily accessible and very clean, as cats are naturally drawn to pristine environments for elimination. Consider placing waterproof pads or absorbent bedding in her favorite resting spots to manage any leaks.

However, it's crucial to watch for signs that indicate a more serious issue, like blood in the urine, straining to urinate, lethargy, or a significant increase or decrease in her water consumption.

Reaching out to a vet for a video consult can help you explore these options further and determine the best next steps for your kitty. Don't hesitate to book a session with Dial A Vet for personalized advice tailored to her specific needs.
