Help, I'm really worried about my cat and could use some advice. My 12-year-old furball has started wheezing almost constantly when he breathes, and it's breaking my heart to see him like this. It sounds kind of like a raspy whistle every time he inhales or exhales. I took him to the vet, and they did X-rays and some other tests, but so far, none of it has given us a clear answer. I've attached a video of him here (imagine a link) so you can hear what I mean. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I don't know if it's allergies, asthma, or something more serious, and I'm scared for him. I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to help him. Anyone with insights or similar experiences, please share your thoughts.
Thanks for reaching out with your concern about your 12-year-old kitty. Wheezing can be a distressing sound, and I understand why you’d be worried.
There are a few reasons your cat might be wheezing. It could be related to something like asthma, which is quite common in cats, especially as they age. Other possibilities include infections, allergies, or even something more complex like heart disease. Additionally, environmental factors like dust, smoke, or strong fragrances could be culprits, or there might be a foreign body irritating the airway.
For now, ensure your home is as free from these irritants as possible. You might try using a humidifier to help keep the airways moist, as drier air can sometimes make wheezing worse. Ensuring your cat has a stress-free, quiet area to rest can also help minimize symptoms.
However, persistent wheezing, especially if it’s new or worsening, is something that should definitely be checked out. Watch for signs like difficulty breathing, lethargy, decreased appetite, or if your kitty’s gums appear pale or bluish—these could be signs of a more serious issue needing urgent care.
I’d recommend booking a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. This way, we can discuss this in more detail and determine the best next steps for your furry friend. Looking forward to helping you both out!
