11 y/o F (spayed) cat not eating

folks, I really need some advice because I'm starting to panic a little. My sweet girl, Luna, who's an 11-year-old spayed kitty, has suddenly decided she's not interested in food. She's always had a healthy appetite, so this is super unlike her. It's been about three days now, and she's just been nibbling at her food, but not really eating much. I’ve tried her favorite treats, even the tuna she usually goes nuts for, and nothing is working. She seems a bit lethargic too, just lying around the house, not her usual playful self. I called the vet, and they can’t see her until next week. I'm worried because I know cats can go downhill fast if they’re not eating. Has anyone experienced something similar? Any tricks to get her eating again or should I head to an emergency clinic instead of waiting? I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and could use some guidance from you all. Thanks in advance!

Answer

Hello there,

I’m sorry to hear about your kitty’s appetite concerns. Loss of appetite in older cats can be due to a variety of reasons. It might be something as simple as minor stress or a change in their surroundings, or it could point towards more serious health issues, like dental disease, kidney problems, or hyperthyroidism, which are more common in older cats.

To start, try to offer her some tasty wet food to see if that stimulates her appetite. Warming up her meals slightly or offering a bit of tuna or chicken could help pique her interest. Make sure her food and water dishes are clean and placed in a quiet area where she feels comfortable eating.

Keep an eye out for any other symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or noticeable weight loss. These could indicate a more pressing health concern that would require a vet’s attention.

If her appetite doesn't improve in a day or two, or if you notice any of these more serious signs, I recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. This way, we can take a closer look at her specific situation and discuss the best course of action for her health and comfort.

Take care of your sweet girl, and let’s get her feeling better soon!
