10 year old cat- gave her a bath Friday and possible UTI?? Unfixed.

I’m really worried about my 10-year-old cat, Luna. I gave her a bath on Friday because she had gotten into something sticky, and since then, she’s been acting a bit off. Normally, she’s really good about using her litter box, but I’ve noticed she’s been avoiding it and seems to be peeing in smaller amounts and really frequently, sometimes even outside the box. She’s even meowing a lot more than usual, especially when trying to go, which breaks my heart. Luna’s unfixed, which we’ve been planning to address, but money’s been tight. I’m concerned she might have a UTI, and I’m not sure if the bath somehow triggered something. Has anyone experienced anything similar? What can I do to help her feel better until I can get her to the vet? Really appreciate any advice.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern about your cat. It sounds like you're taking wonderful care of her. Bathing can sometimes stress cats, which might lead to issues like a urinary tract infection (UTI), especially if she's showing signs like frequent urination, straining, or accidents outside the litter box.

UTIs in cats can occur for various reasons, such as stress, bacteria entering the urinary tract, or underlying conditions like bladder stones. To help her at home, ensure she has access to fresh, clean water to stay hydrated and encourage frequent urination. Providing a quiet, comfortable space might reduce any additional stress she’s feeling.

Keep an eye on her litter box habits. If you notice blood in her urine, excessive grooming of her genital area, or she seems lethargic and uninterested in food or play, these are signs she might need veterinary attention.

Given her age and symptoms, booking a video consult with a vet can help assess her needs more closely. This way, we can discuss the best steps to ensure she’s healthy and happy again!
