just got home from the dog park and noticed my dog, sprinkles, has a peeling nose. my partner says it's just character, but i'm worried. is this a case of too much sunbathing or do i have to start moisturizing her nose now too?

Answer

Hey! I totally get why you'd be worried about Sprinkles' nose. A peeling nose can happen for a couple of reasons, and it's great that you're keeping an eye on it. Sometimes, dogs can get a bit of sunburn on their noses, especially if they have light or pink noses. But there are other things to consider, too.

Here are some symptoms to keep in mind:

  • If there's just a little peeling and Sprinkles is acting normal (eating, drinking, playing), you might just monitor it for now.
  • If the peeling seems severe, or there's cracking, bleeding, crusting, or a change in color, it might be worth having a vet take a closer look.
  • If you notice other signs like lethargy, loss of appetite, or discomfort, it could be indicative of something more serious, like an infection or an autoimmune issue.

For now, try to keep Sprinkles' nose clean and maybe apply a small amount of a pet-safe moisturizer or a bit of coconut oil if her nose seems dry. Make sure whatever you use is vet-approved and safe for dogs. Be sure to avoid human lotions as they can contain ingredients that aren’t safe for her.

Most importantly, if Sprinkles is acting really off or the nose looks painful, definitely give a vet a call. They may ask you to bring her in for an assessment.

Don’t stress too much, though. Peeling noses are quite common and often easy to manage!

If you're unsure or your pet’s symptoms worsen, it's best to book a call with a vet on Dial A Vet for professional advice.
